Recently, I had the pleasure of being hosted at a local winery here in Northern California, Michael David Winery. They are located in Lodi, California and easily accessible right off of Interstate 5. This winery is a hidden oasis tucked behind a couple of buildings, and once inside- I didn’t want to leave!
I have been working with Michael David Winery since this spring, sharing some really delicious wines that they send me with my followers on Instagram, so it was a real treat to be hosted for a day at the vineyards, along with my dearest friend Amanda Bellamy, who I brought along for some good company and to snap a couple of photos for me.
If I had to choose one word to describe Michael David Winery, it would be “heart.” From the passion of the staff – including Darce who hosted an incredibly informative and fun wine tasting for us, and Phillip who took care of us during lunch on the patio and made us feel really special. He suggested some items from the bistro (like the wood fired gluten free & regular arugala and prosciutto pizzas we ordered!) – to the fact that this winery has been run by the Phillips family since it started on the same grounds in 1850 cultivating wine grapes. We’re talking 6 generations!
Even the labels of their wines (like their namesake bottles, as well as “Freakshow”, “Earthquake”, “Politically Correct” and “Inkblot”, to name a few) contain hidden images, deeper meanings, and poems written by their very own Kevin Phillips. If that doesn’t speak volumes to the “heart” rooted in the core of this very special place, I don’t know what does!
Michael David Winery has two buildings for you to check out. The building to the left houses their wine bar, bakery & restaurant – which sources local meats and seasonal produce- for full breakfast and lunch menus. They’ve also got a mini market inside to purchase their wines, apparel, and merchandise, along with produce, cheeses, chocolates, and charcuterie meats to pair with your wines.
The second building is a beautiful Wine Tasting Room. Inside is a gorgeous bar and bright open window walls with views of the grounds- the bistro, pond, botanical garden, and sprawling lawn that currently is home to their pumpkin patch (super family friendly for you parents who want to have a fun time with your kiddos)! This room is light and airy, with a fireplace nook nestled in to one side and impressive wine displays which run the height of the building, almost acting as an art piece to admire while you sip your wines.
Amanda and I enjoyed our bistro lunch seated near the pond and it was so warm and inviting. The landscaping, the atmosphere, and the friendly staff (not to mention the amazing wine and fresh delicious food) all made for a perfect afternoon! We lingered a while because it was such a nice break away from daily life and just a nice little get-away, without being too far from home. We will definitely come back and enjoy this place with our families (and hey, probably another girls day or two as well!)
If you’re local to Northern California, a visit to Michael David Winery needs to be on your must-do list! And if you’re not close enough for a little day trip, they have a wine club you can join! Yep! A wine CLUB! You can choose between reds or mixed reds and whites, and also choose from 3, 6, or 12 bottle shipment tiers. You will receive a package with your selected wines 4 times per year! Thank you again, Michael David Winery and staff for hosting Amanda & I. We had the time of our lives and can’t wait to visit again soon!
